How to Prepare Your Yard for Sod
It is important to prep your soil for sod. Sod is only as good as the preparation done for your yard. Here are some tips to get your yard ready for sod installation:
- Clear the yard of all previous plant debris. One of the best ways to do so is by spraying Roundup RT where the sod will be installed. After spraying, wait at least 3 days for the soil to heal. If this step is skipped, you risk having the old grass and weeds come through the newly laid sod.
- Level the yard of all previous debris left by the old soil, trees, or other landscape.
- Sprinkler installation. Sod is meant to be one of the last steps in a landscape design, so make sure all sprinkler installation is completed by the time your sod is delivered.
- Topsoil. Kentucky Bluegrass has a root depth of 3”-6”, which means your topsoil should be loose enough for the roots to take hold. We recommend at least a 2” depth of loose topsoil. Depending on the soil quality, you may not need to have topsoil shipped in. One way to test this is if you can drag a garden rake through your soil. If the teeth of the rake are breaking through the topsoil at a 2” depth, topsoil may not be required.
- Final Leveling. Once your soil has been broken up and topsoil has been added, level the ground by taking a garden rake to smooth out any bumps or ruts left by footsteps or equipment.
- Measure for sod. Sod is delivered in Square Feet. Our recommended strategy for measuring is by simple formulas:
- Rectangular Area: Length x Width
- Circular Area: A=πr2
- Triangular Area: Length x Width/2
