2024 Spring Utah Lawn Maintenance Guide
Spring lawn maintenance is essential for maintaining a healthy lawn for the year and developing a deep, luscious green that your yard deserves. Here is our tips for maintaining a healthy lawn for the year:
1. Dethatching. Thatch is a layer of dead plant residue that will bed down into the grass, causing the soil to not receive proper water, nutrients, and air. A great way to dethatch is by power raking. A power rake uses mechanical flails to dig out the thatch bedded down near the soil.
2. Aeration. Aeration is a process of poking small holes into your soil, allowing a direct path to the roots for water, nutrients, and air. This process also alleviates soil compaction. Compact soils build a tougher route for the root system to receive proper air flow and nutrients.
3. Fertilization. Fertilizer is essential to maintain a healthy lawn. For Utah lawns, we recommend fertilizing early in the year, right after the snow melts. Here are simple steps to apply fertilizer:
your lawn. Our 50 lb fertilizer bag will cover 5,000-10,000
Sq. Ft.
iv. Apply water after fertilization. Run your sprinkler system
for at least 15 minutes immediately after fertilization. 4. Service your lawn mower. Your lawn mower may be the most used
tool during the year. Proper servicing will ensure your lawn mower will be an asset through the duration of the year. Here are some simple things to look at on your lawn mower.
i. Grease. Make sure to properly grease bearings, joints, and chains to ensure smooth operation.
ii. Oil Change. Make sure to change the oil in your lawn mower’s motor. Check the recommended oil by the manufacturer.
iii. Sharpen mower blades. Take a grinding wheel and sharpen your mower blades. Sharp mower blades allow a full cut of the grass and minimizes skips.
iv. Change and tighten belts. Check belt tread and look for cracks in your belt. If there are cracks, change the belt as soon as possible to ensure your belt will not snap during operation.
